Background and Identification

The company Kelvinator was created in 1914 as a vehicle to produce and sell practical electrical refrigeration for the home. The name "Kelvinator" is a nod to 17th century physicist Lord Kelvin, who discovered the thermodynamic principle of absolute zero. Although the refrigerators the company produced got nowhere near that temperature, the Kelvinator badge was worn with honor by many refrigerators through the bulk of the 1900's.

Kelvinator was absorbed into Swedish company Electrolux in 1986. However, some larger refrigerators, mainly for use in the restaurant industry, are still sold today under the Kelvinator name. Modern fridges with a Kelvinator badge may share some similarities with Electrolux refrigerators.
