Background and Identification
The XPS 12 9250 is a convertible laptop released by Dell in 2015. The top half of the device—the part containing the 12.5-inch screen—can completely detach from the keyboard and work as a fully functional tablet. Both halves of the laptop are made from a magnesium alloy with a black finish and are roughly the same shape and size. The back of the keyboard includes a small trough that holds the screen upright when it is connected.
As for internals, the laptop uses a 6th-generation Intel processor and 4 GB or 8 GB of non-upgradeable memory. The screen comes in two configurations sporting a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels or 3840x2160 pixels (4K). Unlike some comparable 2-in-1s from the same time (e.g. the Surface Pro 4), the XPS 12 9250 does have a fully removable SSD that fits in an M.2 slot on the motherboard. Accessing this component and other vital internals like the battery is relatively straightforward because you can remove the back cover of the device with just a Phillips screwdriver and a spudger. If you can’t find guides for this procedure on iFixit, the Dell service manual has great documentation as well.
You can identify this convertible by finding its unique service tag and entering it on the Dell support website. The service tag is basically Dell’s version of a serial number. For the XPS 12 9250 this number is located on the back of the display section of the device. You can see on the last page of the user’s manual that it can be found just below the circular Dell logo.
