There is one detail that many videos/guides almost never explicitly mention: you don't put any thermal paste on the smaller "die" for the X1 Carbon Gen 6 - and you only catch this if you see others cleaning the original thermal paste for the first time.
* This is mentioned in the description of a video from Duraputer in February 2024: https://youtu.be/VLb8vIzdi6s
* This is also mentioned in a pinned comment of a video from Salem Techsperts in October 2022: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAIypDVt...
It's probably fine to use Honeywell PTM7950, just make sure to perform a CPU-intensive tasks (such as synthetic benchmarking) so that any pockets of air can escape after initial post-market application. If it doesn't perform as intended, then you can always remove it and use a more conventional thermal paste on the CPU.
You lift the internal battery first from the top, and then the bottom.
This is because there are 2 "clips" on the bottom that the battery uses to slide into the chassis.
I also don't believe that the iFixit Jimmy is necessary - in fact, it might scratch up the exterior paint of the X1 Carbon Gen 6. Instead, I find the triangular iFixit picks are more appropriate for the task: iFixit Opening Picks (Set of 6)
Also, at least for my unit, the lid comes off easily and I only use the plastic picks if there's any resistance and I don't want to risk breaking any of the clips.
Here is a video that shows how to disconnect the internal battery connection (timestamped):
Yeah, what's in the photo seems to be the "space filler" unit.
Not sure what's the reasoning for having this as a produced product, but this does seem to match my memory for items being sold via the Lenovo parts storefront at "pcsupport.lenovo[.]com" (which is not to be confused with the public consumer storefront at "lenovo[.]com/*").
Internally, the T470 and the T480 use the same internal battery, so keep that in mind if you're shopping for an internal battery.
Also most SIM eject tools that come with smartphones will also work.
If you need a dedicated "place" where you won't loose those small SIM ejectors, then you can also use the SIM eject bits that are included in the various iFixit toolkits, usually the extended versions.
My only comment is that the photos don't show that the battery being removed. For the relatively simple task of replacing RAM on the T480s (compared to the other repairs listed here on iFixit), you are probably fine leaving the internal battery plugged in if you already turned it off via the UFEI/BIOS settings before starting this. However, I still do like to unplug the internal battery to be extra cautious.
The disassembly process can be significantly simplified if all you want to do is replace the trackpad in the T470. Basically, you only need to do the following:
1. Turn off the internal battery via the Lenovo UFEI/BIOS settings.
2. Remove the external hot swappable battery.
3. Remove the bottom cover.
4. Remove the internal battery.
5. If installed, remove the second RAM card that is closest to the trackpad.
6. Unscrew the trackpad.
7. Remove and replace the trackpad.
See this video from January 2024 that shows this process:
I agree with the other commenters. See this YouTube video from June 2023, which shows that you only need to remove the battery and the secondary RAM card (if installed) to replace the trackpad:
Also, you may want to place a microfiber cloth between the laptop screen and keyboard while it's closed during this repair - this would ensure that the screen won't get scratched/damaged while the trackpad is falling out.
