Background and Identification
Sony is a leading consumer electronics company. It was founded in the middle of World War II in Tokyo, Japan. The company originated as an electronics shop, but after building Japan’s first tape recorder, it became a serious electronics manufacturer. The company was originally called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo but changed its name to Sony in 1958 to make it easier to market themselves worldwide. The name “Sony” has an interesting backstory. It is a mix of the Latin word “sonus”, which is the root of “sound” and “sonic”, and the word “sonny”. “Sonny” was a slang term that meant young boy in America but in Japan referred to respectable and intelligent young men, which the Sony founders saw themselves as.
Among Sony home electronics are Sony DVD players. Sony makes both traditional DVD and Blu-ray players that connect to TVs as well as portable DVD players that have built-in screens. Sony DVD players, or media players, allow the user to insert physical DVDs into the player and watch them on a TV display. Sony DVD players come at a range of price points. For instance, the Blu-ray Disc Player (BDP-S1700) sells for $69.99, while the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player (UBP-X1000ES) sells for $699.99.
Sony DVD players house their internal components in rectangular boxes. They are usually a neutral color and have the Sony logo printed somewhere on the encasing. Sony portable DVD players look like thick small laptops. They have a display attached to the DVD player itself that closes, just like a laptop display.
