“Big Blue Unplugged” will not turn on unless it is plugged into the wall charger, we can leave in plugged in overnight and it still won’t turn on if removed from charger.

It appears as though the battery has failed and needs to be replaced.
Here’s the ifixit Brookstone Big Blue Unplugged Battery Replacement guide that shows how to access the battery.
I cannot find a replacement battery online, you may have better luck.
