Not sure which type you have, be it a window-type unit or a minisplit. If it's a window unit there's a drain usually from the evap drain pan to the outside. Might be clogged. If a minisplit then there's usually either a drain line (possible clog) or there's a drain line to a condensate pump. Could be clogged line or failed pump. Without more info on the unit it's hard to say

Water dripping from the indoor AC unit is usually caused by a clogged drain pipe, dirty air filters, or improper installation level. Try cleaning the filters and checking the drain line for blockages. If the problem continues, professional servicing is recommended to prevent damage to the unit or walls.

As an HVAC professional with over 10 years of hands-on experience, I see water dripping from an AC inside the home very often. The good news is - most causes are common and fixable.

Why water is dripping from your AC

  1. Clogged condensate drain line – Dust, algae, or debris block the drain, forcing water to back up and leak indoors.
  2. Dirty air filter – Restricted airflow can freeze the evaporator coil. When it melts, excess water overflows the drain pan.
  3. Cracked or rusted drain pan – Older systems may have damaged pans that can’t hold water properly.
  4. Low refrigerant – Causes coil freezing, leading to heavy dripping during thawing.
  5. Improper installation or poor leveling – If the unit isn’t level, water won’t flow to the drain correctly.

How to fix it

  • Turn off the AC to prevent further water damage.
  • Check and replace the air filter if it’s dirty.
  • Clear the drain line using a wet/dry vacuum or compressed air (professional cleaning is best).
  • Inspect the drain pan for cracks or rust.
  • Call a licensed HVAC technician if you suspect refrigerant issues or repeated leaks.

At United State Solutions, we fix AC water leaks daily by identifying the root cause - not just the symptom. If your AC is dripping water inside, don’t ignore it. A small leak today can turn into ceiling or drywall damage tomorrow.
