Prevent XP from defragementing an SSD?

I installed an SSD in an old XP laptop which did not come with a hard drive, and got it going (GRRR audio drivers, but I won). However, the OS and drive type do not align, as SSDs do not need to defragment; they need TRIM.

Is it possible to completely block XP from defragmenting the SSD?

Hi @nick

Check if there is a registry setting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout

Value Name: EnableAutoLayout

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

I think that this is the setting used to "optimize" the HDD. (defrag = optimize the layout I think)

If not enter it, save the changes, reboot and check if this disables it ;-)

Yeah the laptop came with a 80GB spinner from the factory which was destroyed for security, but I got what I needed to fit a new drive into the machine at least. Would have liked 256GB but 128GB is plenty for XP and the SSD cost me nothing as I had it on hand.

TBH I probably would have upgraded the laptop anyway, but having the original drive as a spare would have been nice as a spare.
