Block Image

Hi guys can you hel me? I need to replaces a battery in a battery powered amplifier (samson xp106) It has a 12v 9ah battery and I´m wondering if I can replace it with a Li-Ion battery. Also if the charging method would be the same.

Thanks in advanced

@aricohelo How does the battery charge currently? Why do you want to replace the current battery with a Li-ion?

door

The reason is the weight.

It has a charger 18v 1,5ah, it came with the amplifier. But I can buy another kind of charger and use it outside the amp I guess

The charging rate is very different between these batteries. While the device can work as you would expect if you’ve sized the battery properly. The charging of the battery will need to be altered if it can to the needed means a Li-Ion battery system requires. If you don’t you could encounter a bursting battery issue - Smoke & Flames!

@aricohelo sure it can be done. all you need to recognize is that the Lead-acid batteries charge different. Those batteries have three different charging stages on which one of them requires an overvoltage. Hence your power supply being a 18V supply. To convert your equipment, change the battery (Lead Acid to Lithium), do not use the existing charger but get one the will fit your battery (a 12V charger). Make sure that whatever battery you get will have a proper battery management system that monitors charge cycles, temps etc. Something like this would work

Don’t do it. Lithium battery charging requires a smart charger with safety features, designed for your battery pack, including cell balancing for the 3-series pack you need. Think explosion and fire.

Ah, I'm a market naif. Those are new cell stacks packaged with a complete battery management circuit and charge controller. I was thinking AriCohelo intended to buy raw cells and assemble them.

Oldturkey's suggested lithium lead-acid replacement is the way to go. Amazon has a variety of 9 and 10 AH packs. You can probably even find the form factor and terminal arrangement you want.
