Sony WH-H900N h.ear headphones stop charging after 1 minute

Hi, all.

I have a pair of Sony WH-H900N h.ear headphones that are around 3.5 years old.

Lately the charging function has started to play up. They’ll be plugged in to charge, but won’t charge to 100%.

I assumed it was the battery, so following some instructions on IFIXIT, I ordered a replacement battery and replaced it.

Unfortunately, it seems the battery itself is fine, as the issue persists.

The charging light comes on when the headphones are plugged in to charge, but then only stays on for around one minute and then it stops charging. This is intermittent, as if I keep trying, it occasionally charges for longer and might get as high as 70% charged.

I’ve experimented with various charging cables and it’s definitely not a cable issue.

The most success I’ve had is when I put it on a very short cable so that the headphones are sort of hanging a little bit with some of the weight pulling slightly on the cable/port. It could just be coincidence that it’s worked mostly when they’re positioned like this.

I’m assuming it’s either the charge controller or the port that’s the issue.

Has anyone had experience with this who could point me in the right direction to try to fix them? They’re ridiculously expensive headphones, still in really good condition, and I’d really like them to last longer.

I just started having this exact same issue with my WH-H900N a couple of weeks ago.

I thought it was odd when I charged them overnight and didn’t have a green charge light, and got “Battery Level – medium” when I did a power check.

Today I tested it with a different cable and two different power adapters AND a battery pack. All with the same result: they stop charging after about 1 minute.

They’re stuck at about 70% charge, so I’m not sure how much longer they’ll last. There are no firmware updates currently available.

I think I found the problem with mine. If I fold the headphone it will stop charging after 1 minute. If I charge it will unfolded it looks like it keeps going

I got the exact same issue. Every time when connected to cable, it start charging. After a minute or two, it stops. It does not look like it is the loose connection issue because it is very consistently start then stop charging every time. I heard another thread about the unit probably can only handle low charging voltage. I will try to find a lower charger and try it again. The unit is not very built or designed with good quality in my opinion.

Hi,

Use a magnifying glass and a strong light to visually inspect the USB charge port in the headphones to make sure that all the pins are there and that they are straight and parallel with each other.

Also check for any debris that may be lodged in the port enclosure that may be preventing a good electrical connection. If you see anything in there, do not use a metal pin or probe to try and extract it. Try using a vacuum cleaner and check if it can be sucked out or failing that use a sharpened wooden toothpick to gently prise it out.

If the USB port seems to be OK try the following:

Plug the USB charge cable into the headphones only, do not connect the other end to anything. Then firmly holding the headphones where the USB port is located, in one hand, using the other hand grab hold of the USB cable plug where it is inserted into the USB port and gently, stress gently, try to move it up and down and side to side to check for any movement in the port connector, indicating that it may be loose from the board. If it seems loose then you may have to check if it is still soldered on to the board correctly etc

If is seems to be OK then further testing with a DMM (digital multimeter) would be required to find out why it is only charging intermittently.
