Turning an iMac display panel into an external monitor

I have the PowerPC iMac G5 without the iSight camera that I have gutted except for the display panel. I think I have the A1058 system. I’m going to use it as a HDMI Monitor/Display. The display panel does work and has no problems.

  1. What would be the part # for the display
  2. Would anyone know what converter board to use.

Any help you can give me I would love.

I would be connecting it to my 2012/2013 Mac Mini

@macibookg5 verify the panel number for us. Universal LCD drivers and inverters are commonly available and can even supply HDMI etc. The issue here is that we will need to have your complete panel number to determine if a board is available for this particular model of if an existing board can be modified to meet your panels specs. Cost for a complete set of boards/inverter etc. is usually around $USD 60

As one who has built one of the (see pictures) it’s a great idea and very very cost ineffective especially with an 17” display. Take a look at the costs to do it as opposed to just buying a 17” TV. Besides it will not be HDMI.

You may want to re-think this as unlike the newer displays, this series uses CCFL’s (florescent tubes) to illuminate the backlight Vs LED’s. As such you need a high voltage power source (Inverter) which is powered by the power supply as you won’t have the logic board you’ll have no means to adjust the brightness.

The display is manufactured by LG Philips LM171W02(A4)(M1) Apple P/N 661-3598

The displays resolutions are: 16:10 aspect ratio: 1440 x 900, 1152 x 720, 1024 x 640, 800 x 500 4:3 aspect ratio: 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, 640 x 480

What display panel would you recommend to fit inside the case. where the vent screen is at the bottom is where I would put the control board. The board with the brightness contrast power menu buttons.

@macibookg5 - Keep in mind the costs of getting a workable LCD panel and all of the sundry parts will cost more than just buying a used display which might offer more. As an example a used Thunderbolt 27" display aprox $250

Here's the displays specs: 27" Thunderbolt Display and has max resolution of 2560x1440.

I have two which I love!

That is a really good display but I wanted to make a retro display/monitor with this particular case.

You'll need to find a 17" LVDS laptop display and use a kit like this HDMI+DVI+VGA LCD Controller Board Monitor Kit for LM215WF3-SDC2/LM215WF3-SDA1

It will take a bit of effort to find the right LCD and the needed controller kit that works with it.
