Battery or Dock Connector?

My iphone is completely unresponsive, it doesn't respond to toggling the ring/vibrate switch, to being plugged into a charger, to setting the volume and is not detected when connected to a computer. Is there any way to determine whether the fault is a dead Battery or a damaged Dock Connector?

I'd start with the easiest and most economical. Change the battery and go from there. I would think that the battery is at the end of its life span....good luck

I found that Dock Connectors are available at the same price or more cheaply than Batteries, e.g. here www.iphoneshopusa.com and it's less work to replace the Dock Connector.

My real concern however is that I don't understand what's going on. If the battery is completely dead shouldn't the display still display a screen prompting the user to charge the device (the screen with a red discharged battery and a plug and electricity symbol below it)?

Are there any test points that can be safely checked a DMM with the display partially removed and the charger connected?

You might try the battery connectors and see if you have anything coming through with the dock connector plugged in. You can also measure from the dock connector and check it out for any voltage. The iPhone does interesting things when the battery becomes flaky. ...;-)

if your battery is dead you will have no display. Once it goes beyond a certain level your phone almost hibernates to protect the shutdown process. Once truly dead the battery will not charge via the dock, you will need to change it. tbh if you are taking the dock out then take the battery out...you have the board out, you're going to throw away the battery, you don't want a battery at the end of it's life (it's got to be 2-3 years old now) Oldturkey is right, it makes sense..
