For use in monitoring my front door

I'd like to mount an A1023 iSight Web Camera around my front door and hook it up to my MacPro in my office. I've read that the maximum length for a firewire cable is 10'. Since it will not be carrying a lot of data, I think I can use a much longer cable. Next part of the question concerns cost. Can I make a firewire cable? I've never cut into one. I know I have a box of old BNC cable around and certainly a box of Cat 5 cable. Could I cut a short cable and splice wire in? The iSight has a Firewire 400 and I can use an adapter to get into any of the four Firewire 800 ports on my Mac Pro. I already have an A1023 iSight camera set up for FaceTime.

Or is there a wi-fi device to hook up to the camera to send the signal wirelessly?

This would use a 6 pin to 9 pin connector.

mayer, above 33 feet (10M) a repeater is recommended. I would try to extend the cable and see how the camera functions without a repeater ($$$) first. Use a six strand cable and connect it using this diagram as guide. I guess EvoCam or Security Spy might be the software to use.

I'm also working on an app that uses iBeacon but don't know enough about it yet to know if it could be incorporated.

iBeacon looks interesting. Let us know if you get it to work for your application.
