Broken screen, do I need a new LCD too?

Hi guys, just brought an ipad 2 on ebay with a broken screen, in the description and photos it shows that the front is cracked and the LCD touch is only working on half the screen. Does this mean I need to purchase a new LCD + front screen? Thanks, Matthew x.

If the LCD appears to be undamaged, you can replace just the digitizer glass. It can be quite a pain to get the old one off without damaging the wifi antenna and the power flex cable. If you follow ifixit's guide here, and take your time around the two aforementioned parts, it's quite repairable. The adhesive on the glass is quite strong and can be difficult to get off without annihilating the glass. Make sure you wear eye protection and lay something down to contain any glass that comes off. As far as how it compares to an iPhone 4, it's apples and oranges. The iPhone is very cramped inside, but you don't have to deal with glass flying all over the place. The iPad has a ton of space inside, and once you get the glass and old adhesive off, it's fairly easy...once you get the glass and adhesive off. I hope this helps!

Matt, if you can see the full image on the screen, then the only damage the ipad sustained was the glass. If there are any visual imperfections in the image quality such as lines, discoloring, color bleeding, and dark spots then the LCD was damage as well.

Like David mentioned below, the adhesive on the phone is weaker, so it can easily be pulled off. However, the adhesive used on the iPad is much stronger, so, a hair dryer or hot air gun is strongly recommended. That helps soften up the glue.

Sup guys! So I've been dealing a lot with iPad's long enough(particularly with LCD/Digitizer replacements). The most common problem to self repairing is that people make the mistake of not disconnecting the battery cable first!!and this DAMAGES the LCD/Digitizer altogether. So in other words, if u only wanted to repair your Digitizer(the glass) but later after the replacement, the LCD is blank (Blinking when plugged in charger). Eventually, ul have to buy a new LCD (coz it's fvcked!). Best thing to do, DISCONNECT battery cable first! at ALL TIMES!

I have ipad that is glitchy so i changed the touch screen digitizer but then after touch screen is unresponsive is it possible that the problem is the lcd?

Joanna, sorry for the late response. You will have to get a new Digitizer again. As long as the LCD does come on, then the LCD is not the problem. Only the digitizer is the stressful one (that’s if it glitches/opens and closes stuff randomly/ unresponsive) that’s a sign that u must get a brand new one

iPad Touchscreen Fix - Foam Lining Replacement

I've been working with a repair for an iPad 4 for a few days. It's not my first iPad or Apple repair for that matter. I did however learn something new after the new touchscreen digitizer was unresponsive. After examining the old screen I noticed the small outlining of foam with makes a rectangle around the inside of the screen. I have noticed it before but never needed to investigate because my previous repairs worked. The foam was torn, higher in places, and completely gone from others. I deceided to cut 1mm strips (enough to go around the display) but not before dividing a 2mm rectangle to make it thinner, like cutting a slice of bread to make 2 thin slices. After appling this to the outside of the digitizer contact with double sided red tape the iPad worked like a charm.

If all else fails, you might want to try this. I have already cut all the gray foam that comes with the parts I have ordered in the past, just to ready for the next iPad. Maybe this will solve someone's issues with unresponsive touchscreens like it did mine.
