How can I connect my iPod to iTunes without it freezing?

My iPod is showing that there is space taken up under settings but when I try to find something to listen to, it shows that nothing is on it. I tried resetting it by using the center and menu buttons as well as connecting it to iTunes to restore it but all it does is freeze my iTunes before it even pops up in the left side menu. A message pops up saying that there are corrupt files on my device and asks if I would like to scan it and restore it or continue without scanning. I have tried both and it still freezes. Is there any way I can fix it?
