How can I connect my iPod to iTunes without it freezing?

My iPod is showing that there is space taken up under settings but when I try to find something to listen to, it shows that nothing is on it. I tried resetting it by using the center and menu buttons as well as connecting it to iTunes to restore it but all it does is freeze my iTunes before it even pops up in the left side menu. A message pops up saying that there are corrupt files on my device and asks if I would like to scan it and restore it or continue without scanning. I have tried both and it still freezes. Is there any way I can fix it?

Brittany, it is possible that you have a bad hard drive. Try to place your iPod into diagnostics mode and see what you get. To do that, follow this guide. If that does not work, or does not show you anything, place your iPod into disk mode, reformat your drive with your OS. Then plug it in and see if iTunes recognizes your iPod as an iPod that needs to be restore. Do so and see if it syncs your files. Hope this helps, good luck.

I tried to do this but it wouldn't let me. I don't know what is up with my iPod but it's starting to really irritate me. Thank you for the idea though.

What happens when you place your iPod into diagnostic mode?

It won't go into diagnostic mode. It works when I do the format thing that gizmo4sal3 down below said to try, but after I do that and get it working again it goes back to doing the same thing. So I format it again and it works again. I've tried putting music on it little by little but it keeps going back to doing the same thing.

I actually ended up taking it into the apple store. The hard drive in it is shot. The tech there said that it's scratching the disc in it and recommended selling it online cause some people use them for parts. Oh well. I'm getting an iPhone anyway. Thank you for the help though. I really appreciate the effort.

Simply just turn off your internet before you plug in your ipod. I guess the itunes store effects the sync. Anyways that helped me. Give it a shot.

Plug it in with itunes closed

Once it shows up under my computer, you can right click the device and format.

In the format settings change the allocation size to Default allocation size and then do the format. This will WIPE THE DEVICE... But once its done, you should be able to plug into itunes and restore it and get it up and running again. Then sync your music back onto the device and hopefully its all working great.

If still having issues there may be a hardware issue such as bad hard drive, or faulty dock connector.

In my case itunes froze when my ipod classic was connected and could not be shut down either from the programme or via task manager - I had to power off the pc. I eventually solved it by doing a FULL (not a quick) format of the ipod, then restoring it. After this I sync'd everything again and it now appears OK.

Not a quick fix but the only one I know. As to the cause, my only clue is it happened after I sync'd one playlist, rather than all music: could this be a factor?

If there was an alternative to itunes I could use easily and still retain my ipod I'd buy it today.

I recently had this problem and my hard drive was fine mechanically. THIS IS WHAT FIXED IT FOR ME:

I connected my iPod but did NOT open iTunes. I clicked on my iPod as though it was a USB drive and attempted to format it. I then discovered my PC will only format the iPod in NTFS and the iPod needed to be formatted as a FAT32 format.

I found a program here: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.h... that allowed me to format the iPod as a FAT32. It literally took 5 seconds when I ran the program. Finally I reconnected my iPod to iTunes and was able to restore everything as though it was a new iPod.
