What Bluetooth versions are the 2021 Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad

Apple updated and released new Magic accessories for the M1 iMacs, and those have recently become available to purchase as sandalone products.

But what Bluetooth version are these devices?

I know the older Trackpad 2 is Bluetooth 3.0., so I’m assuming the new ones are at least Bluetooth 4.0.

I can’t find any source explaining this and it doesn’t seem ifixit went over this in their M1 iMac teardown. Maybe they assumed we know it’s all Bluetooth 5.0?

It would make sense for it to be 5.0, since the M1 iMac is 5.0.

Does anyone know or know how to figure this out? Does the iMac show the Bluetooth version of connected devices somewhere in its settings?

I don’t think Apple altered the keyboard, mouse or trackpad units. There really is no real reason to do so. These are slow input devices so offering the super fast newest standard doesn’t make economical sense for them (the older parts are cheaper) and for you, you won’t see any difference as hard as you try!

Reference: Breakdown of the Bluetooth specs

Key points:

Bluetooth 2.0 - The introduction of an Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) for faster data transfer. The bit rate of EDR is 3 Mbit/s, although the maximum data transfer rate (allowing for inter-packet time and acknowledgements) is 2.1 Mbit/s.

Bluetooth 5.0 - Provides, for BLE, options that can double the speed (2 Mbit/s burst) at the expense of range, or provide up to four times the range at the expense of data rate (max 3.8 Mbit’s)

As you can see the data rates really haven’t changed. The speed of your typing or movement of the mouse or trackpad is still at the lower data rate ~2.0 Mbit/s.

Joy stick controllers on the other hand, which often have multiple outputs would benefit Bluetooth 5.0 as it allows multiple streams beyond the normal three a headset would use (Left, Right & Mic) of the original Bluetooth spec.

Well, there is at least one good reason to upgrade it. Apple's (macOS) Bluetooth driver is $@$*. When using AirPods (Pro), any time a device that does not support Bluetooth 5.0+ connects with the Mac, the connection with the AirPods will audibly be disrupted for half a second one or several times. This has been an issue for years. Apple will never fix it. The alternate solution is for them to upgrade their accessories to modern Bluetooth so this doesn't continue happening. Will also not happen anytime soon, because they can save maybe half a cent by sticking with the older hardware.

@nshayan - I have no problems with my BT5 stuff with my 2012 MacBook Pro as well as iPad Air2 which I often use with Zoom meetings. I even work out side listening to music on an older iPod Touch with the Beats headset I just bought.

How about creating a new question with the details on what you are using maybe we can get you going.
