Your DS might be falling apart due to its age. Electronics do not last forever, and handheld consoles suffer greatly due to the amount of handling they go through. It really depends on how well it was treated and if it had any protective storage cases, etc.
If you need to buy a charger I recommend going on Ebay or other websites such as craigslist or similar.
