Our 2019 Sony Bravia 65” 900F has started to display a black bar with “muting” showing, although the TV isn’t muted. We can’t seem to get rid of it. What to do?

Try resseting the TV, And see if the problem fixed, I think you'll find the reset option in “About TV “ section

looks like software bug. Try 'unplug' power to tv. Wait for 5 min. With unplugged -> press powerbutton. Now try switch on.
If it does not solve. Then go and reset TV..
