Kitchen Plumbing Drainage Configuration

The piping under the kitchen sink seems to be less than effective. I’ve attached photos & would appreciate suggestions on how I can reconfigure. Thanks

@nlkplumbing here is a question that could use a professional. Wanna give it a try to answer without self promotion?

I was having the same problem…Can you recommend a good plumber for a low price because now I can’t afford spending much money…thank you

@avalon_star

ifixit discourages recommendations as it can be too subjective.

Search online for plumbers in your location and then check any reviews about them.

If they have websites, search them for information as to how much they charge and if there are any discounts for seniors (if applicable) or such like and also if they charge a call out fee or not

Once you have 2 or 3 that seem suitable, contact them and ask about price and availability to do repair and then go with who you feel would be best.

Maybe your friends may know of someone who they would be happy to recommend

arch not sure if it is your pictures or your drainage pipes are not sloping the right way. It appears as if your drain goes into the garbage disposal. You’d have to get that fixed for sure. Also, it looks like you are having some vent issues. Hard to see, but can you ty to tell us what the last component next to the wall is It does look like some kind of vent….

Sorry, I didn’t see that there was an actual reply. The drain comes out of the garbage disposal & attaches to the drain from the other sink. They drop into a P trap in the middle & out behind the wall, with a vent near the wall. The drain between the sink & the garbage disposal slopes to the right, which maybe the cause of some the the drainage problem, along with the hose from the dishwasher dropping below the garbage disposal. That’s why I’m wondering whether the pipe between the garbage disposal & the other sink need to be level or is the slope not a problem? Also, do I need to have the tube from the dishwasher stay above where it goes into the garbage disposal or does it not matter? Thanks

You got a lot of slope going back into the garbage disposal etc. anytime your left sink drains it will first run into the garbage disposal etc. You do want to at least get it somewhat level. This appears to be a bit extreme. Your P-trap also looks like it is almost laying sideways. I recognize it's a pain under the sink and really tight with the garbage disposal (had the same issues under my sink:-) but you will have drain issues the way it runs right now.

@arch It looks like whoever did this wanted only one p-trap but clearly didn’t install it properly. Also since there was no external venting available, they used an internal air admittance valve which is not a problem but it does require you to check it's functionality occasionally as that could also be a culprit (if everything seemed to work well before).

Example of how it works:

Lastly, you know as everyone has told you, that slope is WAY wrong. Here is a sample photo of what it "should" look like:

Thanks for the good solutions to the problem! I have exactly the same situation under the sink in the kitchen. However, I'm not sure if I should try to do everything myself or call a specialist?

If you aren't familar with plumbing, have a bad back, little patience, or no tools to perform the repair, then I would recommend you NOT do the work yourself.

Hire a reputable plumber who can give you a quote based on the pictures and can tell you HIS/HER take on what it should be and they should be able to draw it out for you. If it seems reasonable, then hire them (after checking their referrals though). Angie's list (US) and Homestars (Canada) is a great place to start if you have no desire to talk to your family and friends for recommendations.

@Julie Kilcrease if you feel comfortable doing it, go for it. Post some pics if you'd like so we can see and make recommendations on what adjustments might be needed. In the pics OP posted, alot of his problem could be helped by shortening the black pipe from the disposal. This would eliminate the downward slope towards the disposal and help it drain properly.

This is about as optimal as you can get. Everything is draining down. The possible exception is the disposer, the black pipe out of it seems about a 2 cm too long. Remove the connection and hacksaw off a bit and replace the connection.

This is a very common problem. Most often, drain pipes get clogged due to grease buildup. I have heard of such problems thousands of times. More often than not, water comes from the bathroom or kitchen. A friend of mine had a clogged drain pipe. I came to the rescue; we decided to try different remedies first. But as it turned out, the remedies here were not vital. We remembered that companies do this, so we turned to one of them for help. They know why my kitchen sink is backing up. It was the best way to get rid of the dirt in the pipe.

I think you should replace the piping under the kitchen sink. Thank you for enclosing photos to help you understand what the problem is. The structure is too big and weighs not a little, which is not safe. If you do something wrong, you could flood the kitchen or break the drain pipes. I would not advise changing the configuration of the kitchen plumbing drain yourself but rather using the services of an experienced plumber. I know a good plumber who has changed the plumbing and heating near me, so I recommend him.

This is a kitchen drainage problem not a hot water supply issue. I think you may have posted an answer to the wrong question.
