How to reassemble 3DS XL hinge?

I am trying to repair my 3DS XL (original) since the hinge broke on the power LED side. The few videos I've seen show the ribbon side going in first, then opening the top part of the case and putting the barrel in. However, all the videos I've seen do a jump edit and the barrel is plunged deep into the top part towards the top LCD with no indication of how they got it there. I can't seem to force it in there and I don't want to break anything. I'd rather not remove the other screen if I don't have to, and it doesn't look like it has enough clearance to fit in from the other way even if I did that. Any help would be appreciated.

Nevermind, I bought another barrel because I suspected it may be shot, and it looks like I grabbed the old one by mistake when putting it together. Switched barrels and it slid right in.

I wish someone would answer. I got a new one too but it looks like the half moon on the white plastic part won't quite line up with the black half moon slot on the inside. I can push it in and put it together but not push in the barrel all the way to the new hinge

If anyone can tell how to solve the same problem that Elizabeth has I would be grateful.

You have to make sure to hold the top screen at a certain angle to get it in correctly, and make sure you put the barrel in the right way. Make sure you don't have it flipped. If it works properly, the barrel should slip in and you should be able to open and close the unit smoothly. If it doesn't push in, the barrel may be defective. My old one wouldn't slip in, but since I had bought a new one just in case, I switched and that one worked. I had just mixed up the two at some point.

I will try that. I had thought about it today and came to a similar conclusion

I have the same problem. When I insert the barrel, the white portion of the barrel doesn't sit into the black piece on the other side. I cannot close my 3DS because it just pushes on the housing. Does anyone have photos of how to insert it correctly? I have a brand new hinge barrel and it isn't working.

What is the "certain angle" and "the right way" to put in the barrel?

edit: I was able to insert the barrel completely by opening the 3DS nearly completely. Very close to fully open. The problem I have now is that the barrel slides out when I try to close the 3DS and attach the top cover...

I flipped the barrel over and it now works! If your barrel isn't going in, pull the barrel out, flip it over, and try again! You really need to press on the barrel as you open the 3DS wider and wider to find the sweet spot. Once you find the sweet spot, the barrel slips right in.

I found that the barrel (black plastic on one end and white on the other) had gotten turned and was not lined up. Two pliers with one holding the black side (flat part) and the other on the white plastic got them lined up and then it would push all the way into the lcd side of the housing. I also tried putting the barrel into the lcd housing and turning it with one plier while pushing. I believe that worked better. Sorry to necro this but hopefully it will help some frustrated soul.

Unrelated to this initial question, but I ended up having to take apart and reassemble this unit a few times before it would power up. I finally got it to do so, but not before popping off the plastic clip that holds down the little digitizer cable to the motherboard, so the unit now has no working touchscreen. I ended up buying a New 3DS XL from an Amazon warehouse deal.

Is there like a precise angel it has to be for it to fit in? (IE., the exact degree it has to be at) because “almost opened” has the same meaning as half empty/ full.

Also how do you know when the axel barrel (hinge) is defective?

I’m looking answers that are as specific as possible and I hope someone out there can answer my And many other’s questions. Please and have a nice day.

"Almost opened" means exactly just that. Imagine you are opening the 3DS as if it was in normal operation. "Half open" would mean 50%, "almost open" I would say is 75-90% open. The hinge will turn as you open it. Personally, I was able to get the hinge pushed into the slot within 90% open, so it's a bit of a hassle to hold it together as you are pushing the hinge in.
