Why does my phone randomly shut off?

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 phone can just be sitting on the table not in use or while in use and it will shut off and restart. Any ideas?

A little more info on the phone = it's a Galaxy Mega 5.8 GT-I9152 dual sim phone. It started doing this from day 1. I bought this phone for my wife for christmas. The box appeared to be factory sealed when I opened it and installed the battery to make sure the phone worked which it did and got wrapped until she opened it. I didn't buy it from a store so I guess that was my first mistake. I am wondering if it only has only one sim installed and it is a dual sim phone, if that would be causing it to shut down and restart? And to answer the question of if it has a case or not, it does it either way.

It's the power button, a new one needs to be soldered on. You can mail it to iPad Rehab, they do excellent work

the phone is new, I don't have a case or anything like that, if it is the power button then it would not turn on.

Do you have a case? If so, take it off and make sure it's not pressing on the power button.

Has the phone always done this, or did it just start?

If the phone is brand new and it's doing this, take it back.

If it used to work and this just started, what changed recently? Did you install any apps, or try to root, or change any configuration options?

If the answer to the above is nothing has changed, then try pulling the battery, leaving it out for a few minutes, and see what happens when you restart.

Finally, if nothing else, try a factory reset. With the phone off, boot into recovery by pressing the power button, the home key, and volume up all at the same time. As soon as you see the Samsung logo, release all three buttons.(if you release the buttons a little too early or too late, the phone will try to boot normally. Just power it down and try again.) Assuming you're not rooted you use the volume control keys to choose the factory reset menu option, then press the home key to select it.

If a factory reset doesn't fix it, then I'm afraid it's a hardware problem. Take it back to where you bought it, or go to Samsung's web site for warranty support.

I bought the phone new in a box, never opened, I put the battery in, let the battery drain, then charged fully 100%, but the phone shuts off, I bought a new battery from Amazon and still doing the same, so I know it is not the battery, I googled the issue but no one seems to know how to repair it. I reset the phone from scratch, still shuts off, I don’t think it is the power button. I must be something with the programming, I find the phone is very slow, can not install certain apps, such as my TD Canada trust app or PC card app, anyone know how to fix this shutting off issue?
