MacBook won't read new internal hard drive

Hello,

I recently bought a new internal hard disk to my MacBook. I followed the instructions in the site MacBook Pro 13" Unibody mid 2012 Vervanging van de harde schijf and managed to replace the hard disk correctly but the MacBook does not recognize it. When I turn on the MacBook with a new hard disk is showing a sign of a folder and a question mark, when I turn on the MacBook with the old hard disk is working but the disk is not right.

The old hard drive:

Toshiba, 750 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA

The new hard drive:

[gekoppeld product ontbreekt of is uitgeschakeld: IF107-114]

Could you please help me?

Replacing the drive in its self won't be enough here. You need to install the OS files onto the drive. Think of it this way... A bucket without water won't put out the fire. ;-}

OK, lets get this drive prepped, To start with you need to have a working Mac system to format and install the OS to the drive. So even though your old hard drive is having problems it might be well enough to work here. If not you'll need to find a friend with a Mac.

So with your Mac and the original drive installed we need to connect via a SATA to USB adapter your new drive so both are connected to the system. Now open Disk Utility and format your new drive with a GUID partition map and a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. Once done you'll need to download and run the OS installer from the Apps store to install the OS onto your new drive. At the end of the process the installer will ask you if you want to transfer your user accounts, Apps & data over to the new drive unless you have a backup or don't have anything important this is the best time to copy off your stuff.

Once done shut the system down and swap the drives. Your system should startup without any problems.

If you have a friend with a Mac you could connect your drive to his or if you want you could install the new drive in your system and then by using Target Disk Mode connect your system to your friends Mac so it is seen as if it were a removable drive (that way you don't need the SATA to USB adapter) but you will need either a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable to connect your system to the other (both need the same port type for this to work).

Hi Dan

I think that I've done everything as per your instruction, but once I put the new hard drive in my macbook pro, I'm having the same folder with the ? mark and also I cannot see the drive if I go on the recovering mode.

Any suggestions?

Most likely you have a bad HD SATA cable. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and you'll need this part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. You'll also want to place some electrical tape under the cable as it crosses across the uppercase as the rough aluminum of the case tends to wear the cable causing it to break down. That should fix things for you.
