Loud knocking sound in spin cycle?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out this loud knocking sound that happens when my Kenmore elite goes in to any spin cycle. It's even worse when it's in the high speed spin.

I've pulled off the back of the machine inspected the motor belt and pulley. It all looks fine. I also made sure that its level. But it still makes the noise. Any info will help.

Thanks

John

Thank you for that info. I've been searching for the spider assembly on a Kenmore site and cant find anything under that name. Is there a def name for it? Also it is a front load washer. Thanks.

door

Is it an an unbalanced load?

door

I don't think so because when it empty and I give it a spin I can hear it hitting the outer tub @ one spot. It's kind of a scraping sound when empty and spun by hand.

door

I realized this problem only happened when the washer was draining, so I removed the back panel and drain pump and discovered a penny was hitting the propeller, which was causing this noise during the spin cycle. Don’t ask me how the penny got through washer, but that was my problem that has happen to me at least three times. Guess what, on the bottom of the tub (clear plastic), I can see two more pennies that haven’t got to the drain pump yet. My wife and I discovered this happens every time our college son comes home to visit and washes his clothes.

door

Is there a reasonable fix for that aside from replacement?

John Warren, check this site for more on the parts and diagrams of your machine. You can also get the manual from here. I would take a close look at the shock absorber mount and the suspension spring and counterweight. Make sure that the spring is still attached and the counterweight bolt properly tightened. Of course, you also want to make sure that your machine is level etc. I am not convinced that it is your bearing. Those usually make a whining or grinding noise at all times, not just at a certain location. The issues with your machine sound more like the drum is out of alignment. However, if you need a bearing kit, you can get that from here.

my local repair man says the vibrating and jumping of machine on spin cycle is because of a broken shock absorber (1 of 2). He said he used to replace them is too old now and doesn't do it anymore. Kenmore junk.

If yours is a front load washer it's probably the spider assembly is cracked or broken. The spider assembly is how the shaft attaches to the drum. I would check your owners manual to see if it's under warranty. Some have a lifetime warranty on the drum but the outer tub might need replaced if it did damage to it. The outer tub probably is only under warranty for about 5 years.

Might be a worn out bearing.

door

You will not find it for your washer it will be the whole drum your type of washer doesn’t sell it separate. This is a link to youtube video to replace the bearing but when he takes the outer tub apart you will see what I am talking about. Repair HE3 Washing Machine Bearing Noise The issue is the spider assembly is made of aluminum which is a problem because the detergent corrodes the aluminum and cracks. I had the same thing happen with my whirlpool washer. My washer was under warranty and I talked them into sending me the parts. They wanted to send a tech out but I told the lady nicely that I took it apart and knew what parts I needed so she placed the order and had it shipped to my house. That is why I said to check the back of the owner’s manual for the parts warranty. If you are not under warranty it could cost close to 600 to 1000 dollars to fix.

As the drum spins slowly you won't experience the loud noise, as it speeds up, and so moves out further, what is happening is that the drum is knocking into the heater element which sits at the bottom, between the inner and outer drum.

Remove and refit the element, ensuring that it is correctly seated

While replacing the bearings and seal in my Maytag HE3 I must have bumped the heating element. After manually rotating the drum and listening for the clang sound I determined that it must be the heating element being hit by the rotating drum. I pulled the element out, checked it for damage, and then re-seated it. All is well now. Was freaking out for a few minutes as I thought I had ruined my washing machine. In no position to buy another one. This comment gave me confidence to start the machine up again and the sound was gone. Whew!

My solutions was that the Pulley was loose, even if you tightened the nut, it still wobbled. You shake the pulley with your hand and it wobbles in and out (side to side, the direction of the spin is okay).

I took a large thick washer and put it between the nut and the pulley. It tightened up, and much of the noise went away.

John,

I am having the same problem with my Kenmore He2. How do I determine if the problem is as simple as running a load with Affresh, a problem with the bearings or finally a spider issue? Thanks.

There might be something stuck between the basket and the tub. Bra wires are not uncommon culprits

So how do you know? My Kenmore Elite was making lots of noise yesterday, so I stopped the spin cycle and found some crusty stuff near the edge of the basket. Don't know how long it's been there, but it is very rigid (see pics).

Its the drum smashing into the tub. Next there will be bits of the fiber glass tub and then a leak when it makes a hole in the tub. Ask me how I know!!!!!!

so are the little tub shards grey? and what did you do about it?

door

Yes they are grey. One the back of the drum is a three armed brace rivited to the drum that has the bearing in it. One arm was cracked and allowed the drum to distort causing it to be out of round. I returned the seals and shock absorbers I had purchased prior to dissassembly and purchased a new washing machine and it wasn't a Kenmore!!!

One of the braces on the back of the basket is cracked causing it to distort from being round causing the vibration and the basket to rub on the fiberglass tub wearing a hole in it (the bits and pieces on the seal when you open the door) and ultimately leaking water onto the floor.

I had the same problem! Had the repairman out, he said it is because it needs cleaning, use Affresh, on the clean cycle. Worked immediately, starts happening after about a month and a half. So I run the Affresh- no more knocking!

I am having the same problem for about 3 years now. Repairman has changed lots of little parts and problem keeps letting worse. He was here to fix it again this morning and now tells me it is the drum and bearings and that I will have to get a new machine. I have paid the extended warranty for my machine.

I have a very loud knocking noise during spin cycle and noticed plastic shards in the rim just under the rubber seal and also the plastic around the drum is cracked. Is there a fix for this problem?

The washer pulley nut that holds the pulley drive had come loose on my washer causing the drive pulley to rub against the drive cover. The newer (HE) Kenmore model did not have any ball bearings. Suggest going to the Kenmore site to get a diagram of the proper model before looking at the fix required. (http://www.searspartsdirect.com/)

Looks like the bearings are out on my Kenmore HE3. This morning during washing, notice a very loud banging, thought it was coming from neighbors. Saw it was my washer. Looked up some videos on YouTube to see what the problem was and sure enough the worn out bearings describes my washer perfectly. It has the plastic shredded pieces around the drum, wobbly drum, and very loud banging noise when spinning at high speed.

My washer is 13 years old, lightly used though. I thought for sure my dryer would die before the washer. Looks like replacing is cheaper than repairing.
