I just did this two days ago and it worked flawlessly. As he stated, use an USB cable to connect your printer to your computer and after you apply the older firmware, walk away for at least 15 mins or longer, untill your printer is flashing like a Christmas tree (yes, it actually does this): that is when the firmware has been applied.

As he stated, use an USB cable [ you cannot run the firmware "downgrade" over the network as the software obtains the firmware version from the printer and will not allow a "downgrade" whereas the USB connection does not return the firmware version as you are putting the printer into a service/maintenance mode (and I'll assume they did this to allow techs to "downgrade") ] to connect your printer to your computer and after you apply the older firmware, walk away for at least 15 mins or longer, untill your printer is flashing like a Christmas tree (yes, it actually does this): that is when the firmware has been applied.
