My controllers did in fact have latches on all ribbon cables.

For anyone reading through these comments while attempting this repair: Take your time, have lots of light, a magnifier if possible, and take your time to closely inspect the ribbon connectors for latches before proceeding.

The screw in the top right corner of this pic would be MUCH more accessible if the trigger were removed - is this possible?
