I had luck by grabbing the cable with the pointy tweezers just behind the connector. Theres a little gold part there you can do this to prevent from grabbing the cable itself. Line it up through the groove everyone is talking about and then push down on the back of the connector with the spudger to connect it. I came at it across the opposite side of the phone (i.e. with the batter side facing me).
