This explains why e-ink displays are still so costly. The only reason I can see why you would need a 4 Mb Serial Flash Memory on the e-ink screen flex ribbon is some serious per batch/per screen customization on the factory floor to churn these things out. Which basically means that as far as the manufacturing process goes it's still very hit or miss for these displays with a lot of variance.
