-
-
-
Unscrew the 4 outer screws on the controller cover plate near the base of the sadle
-
Make sure to put the screws in a container, so you don't loose them.
-
-
-
The first cable goes from the controller to the electric motor
-
The cable is held into place by 4 hooks. To get the cable out of the hooks, move one side out of one hook.
-
the move the cable up, between the 2 hooks
-
the move it the opposite way to clear the second hook
-
repeat for the other 2 hooks
-
-
-
Disconnect the cable by pulling the 2 parts apart in a straight line. Do NOT twist the connector or you will damage the pins.
-
-
-
the cable is located near the base of the saddle.
-
You will need to pull the ticker cable out of the housing where the controller is located.
-
Once it is exposed, disconnect it similar to the last cable, by pulling both ends apart in a straight line.
-
-
-
-
Even if your bike doesn't have a front light, the cable will still be present, so you can add a light in the future
-
The cable starts from the enclosure where the controller is located and goes through a protective cable cover towards the front of the bike.
-
pull the cable from the protective cover starting at the end of the cable, near the front of the bike.
-
The are 2 points where the cable is held by a bracket. Pull the cable through underneath the bracket. You might need to adjust the other cable to the sides, so the light cable can pass.
-
-
-
Trace the cable from the front gear towards the controller enclosure
-
Gently pull out the cable connector from the controller enclosure
-
disconnect the connector
-
-
-
Push the cables disconnected cables gently back into the controller enclosure while pulling out the controller starting at the bottom
-
Now the controller is free. We're halfway.
-
-
-
Insert the new controller by pulling all the cables except one through the hole in the enclosure.
-
The only cable that should stay outside is the black and red closure cover cable
-
The other cables should be pulled through the opening. Best to start with the longest cable first. Also make sure to pull the cables to the correct side of the bike, so you don't need to adjust them afterwards.
-
-
-
The electric motor cable is the thick longer cable coming from the controller.
-
Start by putting the part that comes from the controller back into its holding hooks on the frame
-
then connect the cable, but make sure you line up the arrows on both connectors, so the pins will be in the correct position
-
then put the cable back into its other hooks
-
-
-
Reconnect the short thick cable coming from the controller to its counter part coming from the front of the bike.
-
Again pay attention to the arrows on the connectors
-
-
-
The thin cable with the red ending is the front light cable.
-
Put it back into the cable cover and pull it through both brackets
-
You can use a screwdriver to open the cable cover to make it easier to push the cable in
-
-
-
Push the orange and thick connector inside the enclosure behind the controller. You might need to pull the controller slightly out of the enclosure to make some room
-
Then push the controller back into the enclosure until it clears the opening
-
-
-
Before you put the cover plate on make sure the last connector is placed next to the controller.
-
Gently push the cover plate into place
-
Try out your bike with its new controller, preferably outside.

Thanks for making this guide. Did the original controller have a spare connection for Throttle?
Where I can purchase a new controller? Or compatible one? Thank you! Umberto
Thanks for this, need to find a new one tho,may ask Julie K to ask the new uk store if they can sell me one. I’m not totally sure it’s this but I’m sure the battery isn’t dead & every now & then the LCD is full on - everything lit up,& no button press works, you can’t use it or even get it off which suggests power is there,my bro let the battery run flat and since then it’s been crying out for fixing,I’ve done half this work already but put it back so it wouldn’t end up being moved and separated from the parts. Most of the control boxes have loads of wires, not the power and a couple of higo plugs, that’s the box I want. Any link to that part would be great if known,in London so a shop that repairs may have one? If not going thru mate is the only step, they’re great but it’s slow because it’s not here. The uk store needs parts like this but seems geared for sales of new mates mainly. Really miss this bike, back on a 250w bike that’s hopelessly slow and low range.
This is super helpful. Do you know where I can source a replacement controller? The bike is still under warranty but MATE has been unable to send a replacement controller or commit to a date. So I would like to see if I can get the bike back on the road without their help. Many thanks.
