Background
Released in 2004, the JBL On Tour is a compact, lightweight portable speaker designed for travel and mobile audio use. The speaker was introduced during a period of growing demand for portable audio systems, making it compatible with early MP3 players, CD players, and laptops. In 2006, JBL released an updated version called the JBL On Tour Plus, which maintained the same overall design but featured upgraded components and minor cosmetic improvements.
It uses two Odyssey aluminum-domed transducers driven by powerful neodymium magnets, producing a full frequency range from low bass to clear highs. The system incorporates COE (Computer-Optimized Equalization), which digitally fine-tunes the audio output to create a balanced soundstage. Combined with a Class D digital amplifier, the speaker delivers efficient sound while conserving battery life.
The JBL On Tour includes an AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System) that automatically places the speaker into sleep mode when the cover is closed or when no audio input is detected. The device can operate on four AAA batteries and typically provides more than 24 hours of continuous playback at normal volume levels. An amber LED warns users of low battery life, and JBL recommends the use of rechargeable batteries to help reduce environmental impact. Neither the original On Tour nor the On Tour Plus has documented major failure modes or manufacturer recalls.
Identification
The JBL On Tour can be identified by its distinctive folding design in which the top panel slides open to reveal the internal speaker drivers. When closed, the device has a curved rectangular body with smooth rounded edges and a centered JBL logo on the top panel. The power and volume buttons are located on the top surface, while the input jack and power connector are positioned on the rear side. The speaker typically comes in a white housing with flint-gray accents. The official model number and regulatory labels are located on the bottom of the device.
