De gemakkelijkste manier om de standaard MacBook van een MacBook Air of MacBook Pro te onderscheiden is door de onderkant van de schermmodule te bekijken. De standaard MacBook bevat enkel het woord "MacBook." Het modelnummer en het EMC-nummer zijn op de onderkant van de behuizing gedrukt.

== Modelgeschiedenis ==

Het standaard MacBook-model had een witte plastic behuizing, terwijl het high-end model ook verkrijgbaar was in het zwart.

In januari 2008 werd er een compleet nieuw ontwerp aan de familie toegevoegd met de release van de MacBook Air, die slechts 1.24 kilo woog. De MacBook Air, geprezen als 's werelds dunste notebook, had een aluminium behuizing. Om een ongelooflijk dunne en lichte machine te creëren, heeft Apple verschillende compromissen gesloten, waaronder het weglaten van het optische schijfstation, het gebruik van een 1,8-inch harde schijf (welke normaal 2,5 inch is) en het in het moederbord integreren van het RAM-geheugen, waardoor toekomstige RAM-upgrades uitgesloten waren.

Na meer dan twee jaar en een aantal upgrades kondigde Apple in oktober 2008 een geheel nieuw MacBook-model aan: de MacBook Unibody. De MacBook Unibody is een hybride van de oorspronkelijke MacBook en de MacBook Air, waarbij alle functies van de MacBook in een stijlvollere en lichtere aluminium behuizing zijn verpakt.

De MacBook-lijn werd stopgezet halverwege 2010, toen de MacBook Air de rol van Apple's consumentenlaptop overnam, en opnieuw werd uitgebracht in 2015 met slechts één USB-C-poort. Vanaf 9 juli 2019 is de MacBook-serie opnieuw stopgezet.
