Start button stopped working

The start button and 30 second button stoped working on my GE microwave. Nothing happens no matter how hard I press the button. Feels like shame to replace if it otherwise still works. It is a fuse? How can I fix this?

Hi @lufixit

If the control panel lights up, then it isn't a fuse.

Sounds like either the button contact surface that connects to the matrix membrane in the control panel when the buttons are operated have worn out or are dirty and need to be cleaned.

You would need to disconnect the power to the microwave and then open it and remove the control panel, then open the control panel and check what the problem may be.

You could also simply try replacing the control panel, although finding the replacement part is not easy as it is no longer manufactured by GE and no suppliers have it in stock, at least none that I could find. You may have better luck.

Be safety aware when working inside microwave ovens. The HV capacitor in the oven can store >5000V DC for months, even if the power has been disconnected for this length of time. This amount of voltage can seriously injure you. The HV capacitor needs to be correctly discharged as soon as it can be accessed after the oven's cover has been removed and before commencing any further work inside the oven. If you don't know what you're doing, then don't do it! Contact an appliance repair service and ask for a quote.
