My 3DS top screen goes dark, bad flex cable maybe?

I've had my 3DS for a few months now, recently the top screen starts going dark, I can usually wiggle it to get it back, its like the backlight goes out or something. I don't know if it the device has been dropped, my 3 year old plays with the device quite often so it is possible. Other than that the device works fine. When I started googling similar problems I found some people talking about the flex cable, I guess it can go bad from just opening and closing the screen on certain models. Anyone encountered this problem or any clue on how I can fix it. My son ripped the serial number sticker off the back of the device so I can't send it back to Nintendo to get fixed. If its something I can fix myself I'd like to that anyway.

Today my top screen kept going black after I shut the screen before I went to eat lunch. I feel like this is the same thing as your problem because I have never dropped my 3ds and when I wiggle it it starts to come back

Jimmy Mullins, hope I understood your question right. If you want to change the top LCD just follow this guide. I bet that one of the ribbon cables has either come loose in the connector, you might try to reseat all of them, or they have broken from chronic bending. The LCD is available at places like this

I'm just not sure that the problem is the LCD, I don't want to change the LCD if its not bad. I may just reset the ribbon cables. I'll let you know.

if you think you can do this right then try it, but do it at your own risk. I fixed mine using this method and it works great. So the top screen has 2 flex cables that make the screen work. My guess is they're probably loose. Here's my way to fix it. Unscrew the 4 screws on the bottom of the system and remove the back plate, sd card, game card, and battery. Then unscrew the 9 screws on the plastic and (VERY CAREFULLY) remove that plastic. Try not to strip the screws, as you'll need them later. find the flex cables connecting the motherboard and top screen. re-connect them to the motherboard. Put the whole thing back together and then you're done!
