Misaligned Firmware Error in Fix It Hub Console (v1.4.0)

Firmware version 1.4.0 is consistently triggering a "misaligned firmware" error in the Fix It Hub Console.

I’ve confirmed that both the Smart Station and the Iron are running firmware version 1.4.0. However, when I downgrade both devices to version 1.3.2, the error disappears.

I believe this may be a false error. When I check the firmware directly from the Smart Station’s menu, it correctly reports that both the Smart Station and the Iron are on version 1.4.0.

However, when I click on the error message in the Fix It Hub Console, it shows the Iron firmware as blank, while the Hub firmware still shows 1.4.0.

I’ve also tested this on a second computer to rule out a browser issue, and the behavior is the same.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

@deano2064, Sorry this is happening. I'm checking in with the team and will have an update for you soon.

I'm also facing this issue with my FixHub station and soldering iron in the web console. I infer this is a false positive as well, since I observed the same result in the FixHub web console (though I didn't test if downgrading to firmware version 1.3.2 makes this bug go away).

Here's a screenshot from the web console: https://ibb.co/rPB6GQQ

Anyways, this is a friendly reminder that the FixHub soldering iron has its own firmware that may be updated through the FixHub web console: https://www.ifixit.com/fixhub/console

I've forward your issue to the iFixit folks, hang tight!

100% the same here...

Soldering works just fine, but the false positive due to missing firmware number of the soldering iron can be irritating.

Hey y’all — thanks for surfacing this and for the extra context and screenshots. Super helpful.

We’re working on a fix right now, and we’re expecting to get it deployed in the next couple of days. Once it’s live, it should clear up this false “misaligned firmware” error.

The gist is: the console isn’t picking up the soldering iron’s firmware correctly, even though both the iron and the Smart Station are actually running 1.4.0. That missing firmware number on the iron side is what’s triggering the error, but it’s not a real mismatch.

Appreciate your patience — I’ll follow up here once the fix is out.

I had to plug my soldering iron directly into my computer to upgrade the firmware as after updating my power bank it just showed a mismatch. After updating the soldering iron by itself, it worked fine. It would be nice to be able to update the soldering iron while it's plugged into the power bank but it may not be technically possible.

Yeah, that would be ideal — but the Power Station isn’t set up to pass firmware updates through. It’d take a fair amount of internal rework to support that.

That said, keeping the iron updateable on its own does come with some advantages. It keeps the system a little more modular and avoids the added complexity that comes with chained updates.

On the same note, I do wish that overall documentation/messaging regarding updating the firmware for both the FixHub and the FixHub soldering iron (on its own by plugging it in directly into a computer) was overall more prominent in general. I still feel that I "accidentally" stumbled upon this by accident and that I was praying & hoping that search results from my preferred search engine would lead me to the correct place. Even though it did, I think having messaging that encourages owners to update the firmware of both devices ASAP (once these lingering issues are resolved with version 1.4.0) should be included in the FixHub packaging materials.

Since it's been some time since the FixHub was announced, I think at this stage these possible changes for the future would make sense.
