How can I fix calibration problem?

Using the G27 Wheel on PS3 the wheel used to turn all the way left and right to calibrate when you plugged in. For a while it started to lose calibration while playing a game and now the wheel won't operate on a game at all. When the wheel goes to calibrate now it only goes part way. Manually I can turn the wheel all the way left and right. Logitech are not interested as the wheel is two years old.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the site. I tweeted Logitech as well and someone responded there so I'll see what they come back with too. I also tried plugging into a pc and downloading the latest drivers to see if it would work there but no good

Hope it'll work for you. From what I got out of the forums is that it is hardware related. Lets see how Logitech stands behind their products. Good Luck.

Hi Steve,

This is a common problem you describe. It has been verified that a number of G27 controllers have a cracked optical encoder wheel (the part that senses wheel position & calibration). The cracked optical wheel tends to slip during usage and hence you end up with a miscalibrated G27.

I'm currently working with CM Laser Service to test a laser-cut solid brass encoder wheel that will replace the flimsy plastic one that came with my G27. The replacement part is expected to out-live the G27's other components since its a metallic part that cannot crack under normal usage conditions.

Once we complete the test I am willing to make an iFixit guide detailing the whole replacement procedure. The new part will be available for sale from CM Laser Service

Stay Tuned!

Wow thats interesting. Something that Logitech should do something about!

I have the wheel working again after pulling it to bits and putting back together (dot know what I did that made it work again) but it still loses calibration. It may have been caused by too much feedback especially when racing with the red bull prototype. I have turned down feedback as much as possible but still there are calibration issues so I have to unplug and replug in again for recallibration.

I had the same issue here Steve, hopefully you can replace your optical encoder and solve the problem. If your encoder isn't too damaged you can try adding a dab of glue on the center. It may hold just enough to fix it permanently. I fixed mine that way as a temporary solution until I can get a new encoder in there.

Maybe you can repair it too if it isn't as badly cracked as mine was.

GREAT NEWS!

I have finished installing and testing my brass encoder and it works like a charm!

It's doubtful I'll ever need top open up my G27 again.

Here's what I did:

1. Got a replacement from http://cmlaserservice.com/

2. Opened up my G27 and removed the cracked encoder wheel

3. Dabbed a bit of epoxy* on the brass replacement to secure it to the shaft

4. Re-assembled and tested rigorously with full FFB effects

.

.

.

*NOTE: Make sure you test the controller before securing with epoxy or other glue, as the encoder may need to be adjusted slightly up or down along the motor shaft to get the desired effect. Turning your controller on and connecting to a USB port will trigger the self-centering routine. If that passed and the wheel is centered, you have succeded. Otherwise, move the brass wheel a bit further up the shaft towards the black sensor and try again. Mine worked perfect the first time round because I positioned my replacement on the exact spot as my old encoder.

Yay!

Steve Hill, it is possible that the steering gear rack is exactly centered and the cam of the steering shaft is pointing exactly upwards. Any error of one gear only will cause the the steering wheel not beeing able to calibrate. It may just be time to disassemble it, and to take a closer look at it. If you need some help with that, take a look at this great site. Hope this helps to steer you in the right direction :-)

It all comes down to a cheap plastic disc called an "Optical Encoder." The plastic part is unable to withstand the forces going on, sometimes causing it to crack, shatter, etc. It seems to be one of the most common issues for Logitech G25's and G27's. Before anyone disassembles their wheel, I would recommend checking their warranty information. If your warranty is still intact, make use of it. If it is not, carefully open your wheel up to inspect the issue. If indeed the Optical Encoder is cracked, you may be able to glue it back together. If it is past, you can order a new one from cmlaserservice.com, just be sure to see which encoder disc you have. This site make much stronger brass disc, which are a lot stronger than the cheap plastic ones. The only problem is that the site is from Thailand, so it may take some time to receive the part, especially if you live in North/South America.

Hi folks, first of all want to apologize my my English, my name is Gabriel and I am from Argentina, the problem with my G27 is that it does not end the calibration routine, here I leave a link to a video of the steering wheel so that they can see the error, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syhp5y54...

I hope you can help me, thank you very much.

Hi Gabriel, I had the same problem after I took the wheel apart the calibration did not finish because the slider inside was not properly in the middle, I don't know if you disassembled the wheel or not, if you did try to put the slider in the middle again and it should calibrate as usual.

Hope this will help,

Fred

Hello,

First of all, thanks a lot for all information I found here. I have a G27 and I had the calibration issue.

After dissambled my G27, my optical wheel was broken. So I bought a new one, but I have a new problem. After turning the wheel on, power led is blinking, but the wheel doesn’t make its calibration process as the wheel is not moving… After three attempts, power led is blinking fast and that’s all.

I made a video of this problem : https://youtu.be/hihREK_QC1Q

I thought my optical wheel was too low (or too high) on the engin axis, so I tried to change its position but no effect.

If you have any idea… Thanks !
