Would this cable chain work?

Could I connect the following to the FW800 port on my Mac mini to make use of it (as an "USB" port) ?

1.) 1394 9pin male to 1394 6pin female adapter cable +

2.) 1394 6pin male to USB 2.0 male adapter cable +

3.) USB 2.0 female to female adapter connector

2.) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10050077...

3.) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10050055...

Could I safely connect to this cable chain an external HDD or anything else for that matter? Keyboard, mouse, etc.

While it's tempting to connect devices like external HDDs, keyboards, or mice to your Mac mini’s FW800 port using adapters, it won’t work as expected. FireWire (1394) and USB use different protocols, and simple adapter cables can’t translate these signals.

The chain of adapters you mentioned just changes the connector types, but it doesn’t convert the protocols. Even if you connect everything, your Mac won’t recognize USB devices through FireWire.

To safely use USB devices, it’s better to stick to the Mac mini's USB ports or look for a proper FireWire-to-USB protocol converter (which is rare).

I still have a couple FW external HD’s setup with macOS so I can repair FW systems. And I also have PATA & SATA to USB cases so I can transfer people’s data from older FW systems to a newer system.

While FW800 is faster than USB 2.1 & 3.0 interfaces. There is no benefit trying to interface directly into a FW based system or converting an older FW drive using a collection of adapters thinking you can connect between the two. As the slowest interface is the max you would theoretically could achieve. Besides the two interface’s protocols are not compatible to each other, or even the reverse!

Just grab an external HD case which offers the needed drive interface to what the system needs. Transferring the SATA drive to it.
