HP ENVY x360 15-cn0xxx Laptop screen keeps flickering constantly

I have an HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-cn0xxx. Recently, it has started flickering continuously which causes it to freeze. Only solution is to force shutdown with power button. I have reseted windows and installed a new one, issue still persists. I’m pretty convinced that the display cable(flex cable) is damaged. I tried searching online for a replacement but it seems my model type does not exist. Any help?

Hi @edmund7394

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if its display stays stable. Press the F4 key to toggle between laptop screen only, both on together, extended view or external screen only.

If the display on the external monitor is also flickering then there's a problem on the motherboard that would have to be further investigated.

What is the full model number and product number of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?

Asking as there are several variants of the HP ENVY x360 15-cn0??? series and some have two GPUs i.e. a discrete GPU (NVIDIA N17S-LG GeForce MX150) and an Intel UHD 620 integrated GPU, whilst others have the Intel UHD 620 integrated GPU only. So it might be the GPU if it is a discrete one. If your particular model has the two GPUs try using the Intel GPU and see if the display is stable.

If the external monitor display is OK, then try moving the laptop lid slowly, stress very slowly, back and forth to see if doing this affects the stability of the picture.

If it does then it may be a loose or damaged video cable.

If it doesn't then most likely it is a faulty LCD panel.

Here's the maintenance and service guide taken from this support webpage for the model series.

Go to p.52 to view the procedure to remove the display assembly. This will allow you to inspect the cable/cable connection and to replace the display.

The HP part numbers for all the display assemblies compatible with the laptop are shown at the top of p.52. Search online for the part number, applicable to your particular model variant to find suppliers that suit you best.

It looks like the video cable is part of the display assembly and that it is not available as a separate part.

Hi @edmund7394

Here's the HP ENVY x360 15-cn0950nz maintenance and service guide taken from this support page.

If the tests determine that it is the display panel that is the problem, the HP part numbers are shown on the top of p.51

Note: there are no discrete GPUs on any of the systemboards used in the model range only the integrated Intel GPU..

I took the laptop to two different repairers. None of them was able to fix it. I connected it to an external monitor via HDMI. I switched it to external monitor only, it works fine but when I toggle it to pc screen and external monitor it rarely flickers. It flickers as usually when I switch to pc screen only

Does it do this with the charger connected to the laptop?

With or without the charger connected, same issue appears

Did either of the repairers try temporarily replacing the laptop screen to see if doing that resolved the problem?

Did you try moving the lid back and forth to see if doing that affected the display, you never said?

Have you tried altering the screen resolution in Windows to see if that changed anything? Go to Settings > System > Display.

If altering the resolution doesn't help, I think that it is still the LCD screen in the laptop.

Even if it was the video cable, it is part of the LCD panel and not a separate part that you can change

I have fixed a number of HP laptops with display problems that were caused by loose cables. No idea why it seems systemic to HPs, but I would open it up and reseat the cables b4 buying new ones.
