laptop doesn't turn on, no charging light too, what could be wrong?

Had this laptop for a while, but noticed recently that it doesn't turn on any more, and no charging light either when connected with charger. Is there an easy way to check if it is due to failure of mother board or any other components?

Thanks,

Hi Tom, did this just happen out of the blue? Please elaborate on what you were doing before this happened.

Update (04/29/24)

Interesting, In that case I would advise the following:

1. First, try to unplug the CMOS battery and then put it back in to reset the BIOS. If this doesn't work, then it's likely a fault with the motherboard or the bios.

DISCLAIMER: Before you do these, check out what others around here have to say, as many know more than I do.

2. Try to make some measurements with a multimeter to identify any shorts. I would advise you to attempt to use a thermal camera if you have one around. If you don't then there's always apps for mobile devices of all kind to compensate for that! Once you identify what part is shorting the board out, let me know and we can proceed from there.

3. This is less likely, albeit a little (somewhat) simpler. Your BIOS chip could be very well corrupted, and in that case you'd need to write a new BIOS to it. This can be done Via a bios reader. Once you have that, you will need to backup the contents just in case, then write a new bios to it. Once done you should be fine to reinstall the chip.

@lovecd I'd start with the basics. First you want to check your power supply. Make sure it has the proper voltages. Check to make sure that connectors are not bend etc. Check the DC-in jack of your laptop. Make sure there is no corrosion, debris etc. that prevents it from working. Clean it of any debris etc, use a few puffs of air to clean it out.

If none of this works, get an ammeter and see if your laptop draws any amperage from the charger. After that, you need to check and see if your motherboard even gets power. For that of course, you need to open it up. Use these guides Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (15-inch) to work on it.

This "I didn't use it for some time" is a pretty good indicator that teh battery has discharged below its charging threshold and it will not accept a charge. It is "locked" There is a way to deal with that but it's costly. I'd consider replacing the battery for sure.

Post Some good pictures of what you see. That way we can see what you see
