What is wrong with my Dell OptiPlex 3020 power adapter (Solved)

I turned on my Dell OptiPlex 3020 this morning and I get a BIOS message. It says that the power adapter I am using is not factory, although it is. Now my computers runs so slow (crashed twice while trying to write this question). I don't know if this helps but my power brick light is green. The computer is only 1 and a 1/2 years old. Here are some images of what I am talking about

Thanks in advance

Edit: The power adapter is original to the system

@ifixtech64925 Can you try another power adapter of the same model from Dell?

Hi @ifixtech64925,

Check that there's 19.5V DC on the output plug of the power adapter.

door

@jayeff The voltage on the output plug is 19.55 volts DC

Dell Certified tech here: If the green light on the AC Adapter doesn't go out when the machine shuts down, there is a few possibilities. Overheating, or the PC has a bad motherboard/bios. If the AC adapter "box" is in a ventilated area and doesn't feel uncomfortably hot to the touch, I would revert to an earlier BIOS version, or disable the BIOS warning about the power adapter(input). Visually inspect the connections, and ensure that there is no debris or damage. A replacement AC Adapter should be reasonably priced, I have run high end Precision Laptops with cheap 'universal' AC adapters bought from wally world.

Even though the voltage is within specs it still may be a faulty adapter, until proven otherwise.

It may not be able to supply the current required to run the PC properly.

Looking at images of the adapter it has only a standard DC power plug i.e. 2 wires +ve and -ve input only and no 3rd wire input.

Just wondering if the power input is OK and that maybe the power output from the power supply circuit on the motherboard isn't OK for some reason

Just to eliminate the possibility of a corrupted BIOS being the cause, disconnect the power from the PC and then remove the RTC coin cell battery from the motherboard, press and hold the PC power button for 30 seconds, reinsert the RTC coin cell battery (+ve on top as marked on battery), reassemble the PC, reconnect the power and check what happens when you start it.

Here's the owner manual for the 3020M version of your PC that may help. I assume this is your model. The other 3020 model variants have an AC power cord connection to the PSU in the PC case and don't need a power adapter.

Go to p.30 to view the procedure to remove the coin cell battery.

If still no good then try a compatible charger and if still no good its a motherboard problem.

@jayeff @ifixtech64925 this "power output from the power supply circuit on the motherboard isn't OK" sounds about right. Connect an ammeter between the power supply and the desktop and check how many amps it pulls.

Maybe you can work your magic again and find the schematics for a Wistron 13124-1motherboard.

All I can find is the BIOS.bin file and you have to pay for that.

Cheers

@jayeff apparently that one is "not yet available" It just never fails. I do have the one for the OptiPlex 3020 SFF but it's a Wistron DIH81R (12125-1) but I don't think it's going to work on here

@oldturkey03

Thanks for trying.

You're right regarding not applicable as the SFF has a dedicated PSU that is not part of the motherboard

Cheers

@jayeff

Sorry it is been a while, on March 13, I did try your answer, then it worked for a while, before it weirdly stopped turning on, had to reset the power settings today, then it worked, thanks your your answer, it worked!
