"No Bootable Device" error on start up

Alright, so long story short I got this laptop out of a junk box of old electronics at work. Perfect condition, but no hardrive or power supply. Easy to find online and order.

I installed the new hardrive and plugged in the power supply. Yay it boots up!

Then I get a black screen with a note at the top "No bootable device"

So I do some Googleing and try all the fixes that are suggested, I remove and replug in the hard drive, I reset the BIOs settings, I make sire the hardrive is at the top of the boot up presses and I ran a hard drive diagnostic in BIOs. Nothing.

I would love to get this little laptop running so I can bring it to DND games (my usual laptop is twice the size of this one and a bit inconvenient, please help!

@robinrumbolo did you format the HDD and do you have an OS installed? Does your BIOS show the HDD?

@oldturkey03 I have no idea how to format a HDD I'm pretty new to all the computer parts and tech. That might be the issue.

@robinrumbolo It could be if you do not have an operating system on your computer, it can't boot since it has nothing to boot up too :-)

Not sure if you are planning on running Windows on that computer aor what your plans are, but since you are new to this, it can get pretty interesting. LEt's see if we can at least get you started

Here is the Maintenance and Service manual for your computer Pavilion 311 and it will give you some details. Looks like it was running Win 7 when new so you would now need Windows 7 to put it back on. When you look at that manual it talks about restoring etc. which will not work on this computer since teh HDD is new. You got to start from scratch.

If you have a Windows 7 CD set your boot order in Bios to the CD drive and start it up with the Windows disk in there. Then you can install that to the HDD. If you do not, you can either try and find one somewhere (they are around ;-) or if you have another computer you can try to create a bootable USB flash drive. Check this site for more information on that.

Now if you are not biased toward a specific OS I would try a Linux Live CD and install it on the computer just to see if that works. None of this is very complicated, just a bit of a PITA since you will need an Operating System.

See if this site explains it all a bit better then my attempt of clarification :-)
