Screen malfunction after water, how to diagnose?

I accidently got my phone wet and the screen began showing artifacts, started flickering and now it's completely black. Within an hour or so after getting wet. The phone responds with vibrations/buttons/sounds but the screen is black.

I bought the ifixit pro kit and disassembled the phone but I couldnt see any corrosion or signs of water.

How do I diagnose if it's just the bad screen? Is it worth taking the chance of replacing only the screen?

Hi @denny83535

Did you check the LDI (liquid damage indicator) in the SIM card slot, (remove the SIM card tray) to see if the x marks on the white background of the indicator, became pink or red smudges across the indicator, you never mentioned if they were or not.

When you say that you "...disassembled the phone but I couldn't see any corrosion or signs of water.", did you disconnect the flex cables and check the connectors etc for any water or corrosion? Bit hard maybe but perhaps the water may have gotten under any shields as well, which wouldn't be seen.

If you didn't check either of the above, then perhaps it may be prudent to check and clean as necessary before replacing any parts.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives that may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

As far as I know the pixel 7A doesnt have any LDIs (chatted with google support), although there is 1 white mark on the usb charging port (it's white so shouldnt be activated). There's none in the sim card tray.

I disassembled the phone as in I have removed and disconnected the screen, removed the back panel and went even as far as removing the logic board. Following the ifixit guide.

I did clean the connector/cable for the screen (with cotton swab and 99,5% IPA) and tried plugging it back in with no results.

I haven't found a single drop or any residue left from water/corrosion/minerals. Maybe it's too small for me to see with only my eyes.

The phone wasn't submerged in water but got soaked, I feel like the most logical place for the water to intrude would be around the sim tray, because that sits closest to the connector for the screen. But I can't see anything :/

Could the screen be internally bad?

I wish I could test the screen separately somehow.. either with a dummy phone or in a test bench...

Apologies, my mistake regarding the LDI. Very strange though that the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have an LDI in the sim card tray area and the 7a doesn't given the phone is only rated as "water resistant".

Unfortunately Google doesn't or hasn't released any service manuals (or none that I could find anyway) so it would be difficult to find the problem.

Replacing the screen may be the only option. I doubt that you could get one where the seller would offer a refund, (with perhaps a minimal restocking fee) just in case the screen isn't the problem, but you could always ask
