Replacement battery swollen in less than 13 months

I have a late-2013 15" MacBook Pro. I have replaced the battery in it three times. 3/15/2019, 3/18/2021, and 2/5/2022. The most recent battery has swollen to the point there the computer says there is no battery installed.

Could this be due to some hardware issue, that is going to cause any future batter installed to swell? Should I simply take the current battery out and use it with a power adapter only?

I'm trying to limp along until the rumored 15" MacBook Air arrives.

What is your workflow? Are you running the system hard when on battery alone?

If you are not a heavy use person then you do have a logic board issue in the SMC logic. What you are seeing is constant over charging.

You see the SMC uses a few sensors within the battery and system to monitor the charge rate of the battery is within the acceptable window. If not the SMC will drop the charge voltage and or just stop normally, this looks like an over charge condition where the SMC logic is messed up. Likely from a knockoff charger.

If you install CoconutBattery you can see these sensors output. But it’s a bit late to dig into this battery issue if it’s already failed.

So using the system without a battery also has its issues! If SMC doesn’t see the sensors within the battery it will ramp up the fans RPMs and lower the CPUs clocking so you will not get the performance you expect.

Where did you buy the battery, if you got it from iFixit you do have a year warranty which you might still have depending on when you got the battery in Feb or May? (Europeans flip date and month)

Are you running it on the charger all the time? As Dan said the battery should not overcharge, but I have seen some systems that will overcharge if you do not discharge the battery at least once a month.
