Laptop display all black despite no physical damage what’s going on?

Before my laptop display mysteriously stopped working I would get this black screen that would have this text pop up that said “CMOS checksum error invalid “ which I ignored because I had absolutely no idea what that meant and then my laptop would boot up to the login screen as normal until last Saturday 3/4 I kept getting this error message about a usb being unrecognized even though I hadn’t put one in recently. I thought my laptop was just glitching like technology does usually and I went to restart it but then that’s when it happened after I went to restart the laptop the display wouldn’t not come back on and then the caps lock button I noticed on my keyboard was flashing multiple times I counted like 5-6 all together few long ones few short ones I then thought do I have water damage somehow why is my keyboard doing that so then I went to open my base enclosure didn’t see anything that really stuck out that looked damaged (then again I didn’t know what I was looking for) so I closed it up and decided to take it somewhere called HP support and they suggested that I send it to them and they replace the hard drive and motherboard for a large amount of money or take it to somewhere local like a Best Buy geek squad. This proved to be useless also Best Buy geek squad experience was weird they told me they couldn’t help me because I didn’t buy my laptop there it’s out of warranty anyways (had it since 2018) and they sent me to a “Ubreakifixit” I thought this would be the solution but they called me today saying my laptop is unrepairable which I can’t believe, my friend linked me to this page in hopes of some real answers and help I’m hoping I can get some help here

@thenameles86973 unrepairable how? Did you get a new motherboard? what has been done to the laptop this far? No sure if you had receive a number with this error CMOS checksum error invalid, or just that error. Ultimately it means your CMOS and BIOS can't be verified, your computer does not know what do with the BIOS. Possibilities here would have been to replace the CMOS battery and update the BIOS. Worst case would be to find/flash the BIOS or replace the BIOS IC itself, or the motherboard.

@oldturkey03 that’s what the place called me told me they said it’s “unrepairable” but in my honest opinion I don’t think they tried everything possible to get it working . I have to pick up my laptop from the ubreakifixit place tomorrow and I’m gonna have to do what they could not and Best Buy either. From what I’ve researched so far the issue is definitely related to the cmos error I got I don’t remember seeing a number honestly but I do remember it saying something about the bios settings and them possibly being invalid. My friend who said he had a similar problem told me that it could also be the RAM sticks so we have a couple possibilities at least when I was on the line with HP tech support they mentioned something about rebooting the bios settings with a USB drive and putting it into my laptop that doesn’t turn all the way on I haven’t tried that yet either would that work at all? Otherwise what do you think my best method of action should be ? Haven’t replaced any of the parts yet

(Not sure if my last comment posted) my apologies for a double comment if so

I have to go back to the ubreakifixit place tomorrow and get my laptop back from them from what I was told they tried the LCD display and maybe something else but from what I’ve been researching about this issue the problem is definitely linked to possibly few things could be the cmos battery like you said , could be my bios settings and the HP support team told me if I put a recovery usb in my laptop with bios settings update it could work I haven’t tried that yet is that something that would be an option for me? Otherwise my friend told me that he had a similar issue with his HP and it ended up being that one of his RAM sticks was damaged and he told me to try and see if the RAM sticks are damaged I was going to try that also. Otherwise do you have any other ideas what the issues could be linked to my laptop?

Also HP support when I called them the first time said that I could send it to them and they would replace the hard drive and motherboard for an expensive amount of money so then I called again then they ask I would have to contact a local service repair which brought me to the Best Buy and “UBreakifixit” they have so many numbers to call for products that are in warehouse and out of warranty the whole process of trying to actually get help for this has been stressful as hell

@thenameless86973 this "rebooting the bios settings with a USB drive and putting it into my laptop t" (follow the HP instructions on their website about updating the BIOS) and the RAM are definitely things you want to try first. After that you could try to flash your BIOS, but that will require some special tools/software etc.

Try the easy things first

Hi @thenameless86

Try removing the main battery from the laptop and then press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it.

Reinstall the main battery, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger, allow the battery to fully charge and then try turning it on.

Here's the maintenance and service guide for the laptop. Go to p.27 to view the procedure to remove the battery

Well The screen might remain black when there is a corrupted graphics driver or a problem with the LCD display backlight. To test the display, attach an external monitor, and restart the computer.
