Erratic behaviors and reboots yet sometimes works fine?

Block Image

Samsung QN70Q6DTAFXZA, latest firmware updated. Images uploaded are examples of graphical errors it occasionally displays. So if I get home from work and turn on my tv it works fine for a few minutes, pull up a 4k youtube video and scroll the menu a bit. After a few minutes of this it will reboot. When it boots back up the problems begin. Stuttered boot up, lines appear on image, reboots as soon as remote is used. I've tried disconnecting each side of the panel but there are no boot issues when disconnected individually. Ocassionally it will turn on and begin faulting immediately and sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes. The image quality is flawless until these issues flare up. Once they do they won't go away until it's been unplugged for 30 or so minutes. It also seems that when I start using the remote a lot(flipping through menus etc.) it can trigger the issues. I'm thinking at this point with this many sporadic issues it may just need a new mainboard. Any thoughts? I'm going to be testing the voltage on the mainboard tonight.

Hi @zakh4111,

Try removing the back cover and use a fan to blow air on the boards Try to direct it to one board at a time.

Just to eliminate if it is an overheating problem i.e. component running hot when it shouldn't be

Thanks for the reply. I've noticed the shield over the cpu is quite hot to the touch after just a few minutes. I'm used to working on computers and unsure if this is normal for the processor on a tv. This model has a single main board that connects directly into the panel board where it then splits to each side of screen with "C" ribbon. What would be a normal operating temperature? I've checked and it does have a small thermal pad between cpu and the shield.

@zakh4111

I don't know what the normal op temp would be but if it remains stable when being cooled, then it's a start to finding out what's wrong.

Does it remain stable with no inputs/outputs connected and you just turn on and scroll through the TV settings menus?

Just trying to eliminate if an input or output may be the cause of the problem i.e. signal source or perhaps things like one connect box or hdmi-arc connection etc

Alright I'll cool down the cpu tonight and see if I can get it running for more than a few minutes. I am doing all testing with no inputs. It is the tv's own menus that I was scrolling through to help trigger the issue. I will update later once I've tested a few of your suggestions. Thanks

@zakh4111 this "Stuttered boot up, lines appear on image, reboots as soon as remote is used." is common with failure of the signal processing IC failures. It is part of the T-con circuitry (I believe your set is having the T-con board integrated onto the main board. Sometimes you can make the determination by measuring the voltages going to it etc., but for that we would need to have schematics for your main board available (post some good pictures of your boards with your QUESTION). Use this guide Adding images to an existing question - iFixit Repair Guide for that. Other times you can try and utilize freeze spray on your main board and see if that eliminates those lines etc. If so, you once more know that the issue is the processor.

Hi, I have included the requested images in the original post now. Thanks for the help

@zakh4111 I do not like the way that looks. Seems as if it is mainly on the bottom part of the screen. It would be difficult for the T-con part to do that. It could, however, be part of the main board that has failed. Possible the memory etc. Since your T-con board is part of the mainboard, a replacement "may" fix this.

Ya it's not a great look. It has made lines going to the top or sometimes just a sliver in the middle. Also the tv ran for about 15 minutes playing 4k youtube without issue before it rebooted and began to produce these errors. Going to try a new board as I can't reproduce any errors when powering each side of the board seperately. Thanks for the help and will update when repaired or recycled.

@zakh4111 if nothing else, try some freeze spray, on some of the IC's on the main board. See if keeping them cool makes a difference and it might also pinpoint which IC gets hot. Unless, of course, you have a FLIR :-) then use that.

In testing the mainboard I found an area with shorted capacitors surrounding a crystal oscillator. New mainboard on the way will update when it arrives.
