Bad LED Strip or LED driver board?

Hi there,

Recently found a "great deal" on FB Marketplace for a 55" 4k Vizio smart TV (model D55-F2). Was only $60 USD. It came with no remote and no stand which I thought was the reason for the bargain, perfect TV for the kids playroom.

Turns out there's a backlight issue that didn't really show in the photos on the listing. Not gonna let the bad guys win though so I'm determined to fix it.

I did a bit of research and found someone saying the problem could be a LED driver board rather than a bad led strip itself.

My instincts/common sense tells me it a bad strip. Can anyone confirm from the picture attached? Looks like these Vizios are pretty easy to teardown. Would one strip be enough or should the whole array be replaced?

Thanks in advance.

I purchased a Vizio D55-F2 model TV and I’m currently experiencing the black screen. I’ve performed the flashlight test, in which I’m able to see the picture and the tv also still has sound. I’ve purchased a replacement power supply board and tested it but had no change. What else could be the problem? What should I test or replace next?

@bobmorales you would not want to replace a single strip anyway. Get the complete array and replace all of them. Something like this should work for you. The D55-F2 doesn't use a separate LED driver board. The backlight is driven of the power board.

Hi oldturkey,

I mentioned replacing one strip as the full array was out of stock everywhere and I could only find a single on eBay. An hour ago I got a stock notification from ShopJimmy that the D55-f2 set was back in stock so it should be here in a week. Doubled my cost so far so now the deal isn't so great but better than trashing a perfectly good TV.

By the way, a few years ago you helped me fix a 27 inch HP monitor. Just wanted to let you know my dad has been using it as his daily driver since (almost 3 years now!) With no problems.

Pinkish glow from corner of monitor 5 seconds after power on.

@bobmorales AWESOME! Thanks for letting me know. You got the Vizio for a good price and even if you would replace all the boards and the LED strips, you are still well within an economic repair. I know you get the beast back into the action :-)

LED backlights are setup differently on TVs. Some are single strips, some dual. Some are controlled, some not. The first thing to check it the drive voltage for the LEDs. It is normally a separate supply from the power board. Then work your way to the LED strip(s).
