My Computer is slow starting up

Hello, basically whenever I turn on my PC it takes 3:40 (3 minutes 40 seconds) for my pc to boot, and 3 minutes to load the desktop after entering my password, it also takes around 45 seconds to load all the icons that are on the desktop.  I was also talking about this issue in my other question and they recommended me to make a new question for this.

How much RAM does your system have? What CPU does it have? Does it have a hard drive or a solid state drive?

door

@andrewsawesome it has 8GB the CPU is a Intel core i3-3220 according to windows. It has a hard drive.

door

@catlove I would recommend switching to a Solid State Drive like https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B073SBQMCX/r.... Let me know if you need instructions on moving your data to the new SSD, let me know.

Ok, so what I did to fix the issue, since this desktop does not have important data on it I reset the desktop to factory settings. Currently it only takes around 25 seconds to start up. We will see how fast it runs after installing a few things.

Was this caused because I had too much on the drive?

Aka, I used the reset option on windows and I picked "Remove All Data"

Hi @catlove

Could have been any one of or bits of all the answers given and anything in between. But it wasn't hardware itself though could have been corrupt drivers.

Hi @catlove ,

Things to try:

i). Run an sfc command to make sure that all the system files are OK. Type cmd in the Windows search box, on the left side of the TaskBar and when the Command app appears, click on Run as Administrator. When the Command window opens type sfc /scannow and then press the Enter key. Note: In the command line there is a space before the / symbol but not after. If you make a typing error, use the backspace key to get back to where the error is and retype the command. This is old world computing - keyboard only.

ii). Try starting the PC in safe mode with networking and check how long it takes to load.

The display will look different because only generic Windows drivers are loaded and not drivers specific to the hardware in your PC.

If it starts OK in safe mode, then there is a driver problem. Have you checked if all the drivers are up to date? Look in Device Manager for any hardware entries that have a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross next to them. To get to Device manager, press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the link. You can also update any drivers from here. Select a hardware device e.g. display adapter click on the > symbol to the left of the Adapter category then right click on the display adapter hardware entry and click on update drivers. You need to be online for this to work.

iii) Check what programs are being loaded at startup. Go to Task Manager > Startup. To get to Task Manager, right click on the TaskBar and click on the link. Some programs are necessary but a lot aren’t. If you don’t recognize the program name, Google it to find out what it is for and what it does. Sometimes when programs are installed they a placed in Startup to effectively be pre-loaded in case you need to use them. They will open faster because of this. If you hardly ever use them then it just wastes resources and if there is a problem with their installation etc, this can slow down the startup of the PC.

You can disable the program from loading at startup by right click on the Program’s Status and selecting disable. Restart the PC in the normal manner and check if it loads any faster. If there are any problems caused by disabling it, simply re-enable it again the same way that you disabled it. Disabling a program in Startup does not disable the program itself. You can still use it by clicking on the program icon if it is on the desktop or looking through the menus when you click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar. It just takes longer to open that’s all.

@jayeff’s answer is correct and should of course be followed but for the less technically inclined one could try:

  1. Defrag your hard drive IF NOT Solid State.
  2. Run something like the free version of Advanced System Care: https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...
  3. Run full security scan from Settings.
  4. Update all drivers with something like freeware Drive Booster: https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...
  5. Upgrade your main hard drive to SSD?

3.4 minutes is too long. It would have been better if you could have told your PC specs and how old is it.

Slow issues can be fixed by -

  1. Uninstalling programs that you don’t need.
  2. Use one browser instead of two or three.
  3. If on Windows, use classic settings and layout for faster speed.
  4. Don’t store items on desktop, keep your C drive or desktop clean.
  5. Move items to other drives from Download folder, My pics folder.
  6. Check for low disk space and free up space.
