Odds this will run Win11?

I've had this system for a long time due to what I paid for it and how well it has held up over time with the i7-3770 CPU. I've also looked into upgrading it to something newer but I could never justify it due to how well the system has held up. Sadly I think it met the final boss with Win11: TPM required/8th gen+ CPU required.

Look I'm okay with taking the L on this XPS if need be but my issue now is if this will work I'm doing so at higher risk until I know it will work for sure, especially since this system is no longer supported by Dell. If I need to take an L on the Dell and upgrade it to 10 and stay there until 2025, so be it.

I've held onto it so long since I paid $40 for it a few years ago from someone who wanted it gone - this will be hard to beat. A lot of newer prebuilts are sardine cans with nonstandard motherboard and power supply combinations - it's a hard sell when this has held up so well. I will never get NVMe on 3rd gen but I've never been unhappy with it otherwise.

Besides the fact I'm potentially screwed on 6th gen unnecessarily, what hope do I have for Windows beyond 10 with the XPS?

Hey Nick,

This image may help. I’m not sure I’ve heard needing an 8th CPU.

Microsoft specifically says 8th gen-present is officially supported. It also lacks a TPM, so I need to see how dead I am here beyond Win10 unless that requirement is satisfied somehow elsehow.

@nick

just wondering if there are any "tpm" header pins, socket etc on the motherboard in your laptop?

Perhaps even if you could fit an after market TPM2.0 chip then maybe the CPU won't support TPM anyway.

@jayeff It's a desktop. Doubt Dell has pinouts for it, so I'd need to hope for a virtual TPM which may not even be present in the Ivy Bridge chips as it's ~1 generation too old.

My problem isn't the final boss being Win11 - it's how they arbitrarily killed a bunch of official support they didn't need to that's worrying me.

My mistake.;-(

Read the question and didn't look at the device icon

@jayeff These new requirements are downright frustrating at this point. The 3770 is old and nobody has updated drivers in god knows how long but the chips are still holding their own - outside of NVMe I see nothing that's wildly better then the 3770. I have a Win10 license for it so it's a matter of installing 10 and then 11. It also isn't infested with nonstandard motherboards and power supplies.

It should be my choice to risk it when I know Intel probably will tell me it's not supported (at my own risk) and Dell will tell me it was not tested and it's an at risk upgrade. Worst case I need to go back to 8 or 10.

I just built an AMD Ryzen 7-5600x. Hopefully, that will run W11, but all my other computers are i7 and one i5 so those will stay on W10 until they die. But regressing to W8 is definitely not advised. That OS is worse than Vista IMHO. Neither of which I ever used.

I have the 10 license but I run 8.1 on the XPS.

why? W8 was as bad as Vista

@ruggb Less spyware but apps are begining to drop it so I'm probably going to upgrade it to 10.

@jayeff I'm upgrading :-). Lost the HT but ehh on a 6C/6T CPU I don't care.
