Like others my beloved Kindle Fire HDX 8.9”, purchased in June 2014, has developed “ghost touch”. I presume I need to replace the screen. :(
How can I tell which replacement part to order?

Hopefully I have the information that you need.
According to this link depending on when your model was made in 2014 you either have a Fire HDX 8.9” 3rd generation or 4th generation.
If it is a 3rd gen, then I think that the model number is a GU045RW. Hopefully this may be found somewhere on the device (back cover?) to verify this.
If it is then here’s a supplier. Please verify with the seller first that it is a touch screen if you decide it is correct for your device and decide to purchase from them.
It was found by searching for GU045RW LCD digitizer screen. There were other suppliers but they all had no stock or sold out.

Amazon have made it really difficult with their Kindle models to identify the exact model etc so apologies if this isn’t correct.

I have been told by a repair shop that the replacement part is no longer available. If I must go into the used market it makes identifying the exact part I need all the more urgent,

The serial number is B0180706349706JK. The "Type" (according to my Amazon devices) is Kindle Fire HDX 8.9". The link above says that's a Kindle 8 and that the serial numbers of Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 made in 2014 are unknown.
