The home button on my 3gs is slow to respond I have to wait 3 or 4 seconds after I press it the phone works fine and is responsive all through the applications its just the home button do you think it needs replacing??

Can you see if the button is sticking? The only way the home button can cause slow reactions is by not releasing quick enough. So mechanically speaking, you push the button and it makes contact, then you release the button but it stays down for your said 4 seconds and THEN finally moves up far enough to lose contact and send a signal.
Unfortuantely we don't appear to have a home button manual, but use this display assembly removal guide to get the front off and you should be able to access the home button to see what is going on. See if it's gunked up or sticking. If it is, clean or replace. If it's not...err...well in my mind then it HAS to be a software problem and I would recommend a hard reset to see if maybe that cleared your gremlins.

What software are you on? Not updating can cause slow responses and so can jailbreaking. Try updating it.

I am on latest ios not jailbroken it was slow to respond on 4.3.5 so thats why I updated to ios5 I think there is something wrong with the button thanks
Changed the settign on tripple click to off and problem solved strange but true thanks
