spilled water on my laptop, now I cant put in my password

Hi,

Yesterday I accidentally spilled water on my laptop. I dried it off with paper towels and it showed that there was no operating system ( windows 10), I was able to get the operating system back on my laptop and use the laptop. However last night I wasnt able to put in my password when i load up the laptop. The keys seem to be stuck and I cant type in the letters it lets me put in a couple of letters but not all of the password. I turned off my laptop and left it last night. This morning I tried again and wasnt able to put it in again. I turned off my laptop and put it on its side with a towel underneath. I cant take the keyboard or battery out. Does anyone have any suggestions? thank you .

Hi @colleen32 ,

The laptop will need to be opened and inspected as to what damage has occurred.

Water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the laptop’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it has been properly cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your laptop and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the laptop to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the laptop and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the concentration (%) of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Also remove any shields that may be covering some components as there may be corrosion under them as well.

The keyboard may have to be replaced as usually trying to repair a keyboard can cause more problems that what was there before.

Hopefully after you have done all this the laptop might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the maintenance and service guide for the laptop, taken from this webpage. This will help to disassemble the laptop to remove the components etc. It also has the part numbers for all the major parts if a replacement part is required.

If this process seems too daunting, take your laptop to a reputable, professional laptop repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later. It isn’t going to fix itself.
