If you have firewire devices connected and they are recognized by your Mac, System Profiler should be able to list the devices.

If it does not, I would try logging out and logging back into a different account, and trying System Profiler again.

If you get the same result (no devices shown), try zapping PRAM (hold down Command, Option, P and R keys simultaneously when booting the Mac, and keep holding them until you hear 3 or more startup chimes).

Maybe the I/O Board in the Mini is defect and need to be replaced when points that charles2 mentioned not helped.

When there is no way to get Firewire to function properly again even a problem in the LB is possible.

Before you go running amuck, you should also try reinstalling the OS.

hi,

I have done all what suggested, so I think it must be the LB. Best regards thomas

Ah, Firewire. And we thought SCSI was full of voodoo.

First try some other FW devices to make sure it's not just one bad one.

I work on a lot of sick drives, and have had a lot of Firewire ports, both in devices and computers, get fried. Now I only use FW when forced to (like to boot a PPC to an external drive), and use a FW isolator cable--one that does not transmit power, only data--to protect my diagnostic drives.

I have been able to resuscitate a couple of FW ports on computers (a Cube, for example) this way: perform a "programmer's reset," the same way you do when you are applying a firmware update. I think on some MacBooks and MacBook Pros you start with the computer off, then hold down the power button till it flashes quickly. From there the computer will reboot on its own.

You should also try resetting the PMU or SMU. And definitely try booting to an external to make sure it's not a software problem with your installed system.

trollp- Just so Im clear a recap.

You have noted that the firewire device is showing up in the System Profiler...

You have logged out then back in under different user account name...

You have zapped the Pram ( min 3 Times )

And you have reinstalled the OS.

You still have a long way to go before you get to the LB.

For instance, you may have a compatibility issue with the device and your Mac ( the type would help ).

Also cabling has been know to go bad along with the ports on your firewire device and your Mac.

If the device is a drive problems can occur with the controller card. Older drives had issues with the Oxford 911 chipset.

I'm afraid the list of possibilities is to great, however the LB is one of the last items on the list to suspect.

For better answers, more information is required.

I have the same problem on MBP Santa Rosa 4.1 15" After an attempt to start in target disk mode i found that the firewire is not working. Going to the System profiler->FireWire I get only "Unable to list FireWire devises" WITHOUT HAVING ANYTHING CONNECTED TO THE FIREWIRE PORT!

1.Clearing the pram does not clear the pram!! The clock values still keeps the time (made in swiss:)??

The track pad double click speed is the way it was...no indication of reseting at all.

Yes yes I press CMD, ALT, P and R (Have had Mac's since Mac Performa) and the chimes are repeating just the way they should but no actual reset is done.

2. Zooming with the track pad did not work, but started working again after clean system install.

3. Powering off, removing the battery and pressing and holding the power button does not have any effect.

4. In the Console I saw a message "the firewire bus may be unstable"

5. In single user mode i can see that firewire gets registered with speed s100 instead of s 800

6. Run the apple hardware test. Here is what is says:

Faulty hardware (not quoting) 4sns/1/40000000 tgoh - 73.875

I run it again. This time the last 5 digits were 75.125

Oh...and the are many people with this problem but apple (Denmark) says that they will not cover a repair.

Why should Apple replace the part only if some people has nearly sounded issue with the unit?

I tell you what. The TG0H error suggest the GPU heat-sink sensor is faulty. You should check in this direction. SNS still means that you have to check your unit according LogicBoard Failures. In this case SNS=Sensor issues. The GPU and CPU heatsinks are the same in this unit.

Best regards

Thanks for help u0d102y. I will look into it.

"Why should Apple replace the part only if some people has nearly sounded issue with the unit?"

Apple should replace or repair the unit because according to the internet the issue is as common as the nVidia 8600gt issue in mcabook pro's.

Do a search on "Unable to list FireWire devises" and/or "mbp nvidia 8600gt" and you will see what i mean.

Apple has known about the problem for a long time.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317?viewl...

Not an easy to find unless you you know what you are looking for and not indicating how serious the problem can be or that the logic board might have to be replaced.

Think about it: On many Mac's the firewire is not working any more, just after the warranty is over.

It sounds to me like cutting corners more than anything else.
